"And Now for the Bad News"
(Outline Charles Price)
We need to understand how bad the bad news is if we are ever to understand how good the good news is. The good news is only good news because it is rescuing us from the bad news.
If God is not a God of wrath we must question whether he is a God of love. The Provocation of the wrath of God.
1. The Provocation of God: On what grounds is God angry with us?
Romans 1:18; Romans 1:21; Romans 1:25; Romans 1:28
The issue is not ignorance the issue is disobedience.
A. God has revealed Himself in Creation. Romans 1:20
Behind the marvel of this creation is a creator.
"I never gaze at the stars without feeling as if I am looking into the face of God." Abraham
B. God has revealed Himself in conscience. Romans 2:15
"When people stop believing in God they don't believe in nothing, they believe in everything." PK Chesterton
2. How does the wrath of God show itself?
A. The immediate expression of God's wrath
Romans 1:24; Romans 1:26; Romans 1:28
How is God's wrath expressed in the present? God gives us over and lets us go to the logical end of our own choices.
Three areas where God gives people over:
i. Sexual perversion. Romans 1:24
"Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns." 1 Corinthians 5:5
Every time you send it is easier to send the next time.
Female homosexuality: Romans 1:26
Male homosexuality: Romans 1:27
"Confusion about deity leads to confusion about humanity. Confusion about humanity leads to confusion about identity. Confusion about identity gives rise to confusion about sexuality." Stuart Briscoe
ii. Material Preoccupation; Romans 1:25
Idolatry: When created things replace the creator and we worship and serve created things.
When materialism becomes our God, then sex becomes the Goddess.
iii. Self Promotion.
Romans 1:21; Romans 1:20
When you detach yourself from God you have no means of knowing what is true, what is right, because the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
Romans 1:28; Romans 1:29
B. Ultimate expression of God's wrath.
Romans 2:5, Romans 2:16
If the problem with sin is that it distorts my life, something that
messes me up, something that makes me a slave; then you can resolve
it by trying to overcome it, by getting some counseling, by trying to
resolve it. That is not the issue with sin. The problem with sin is this,
sin provokes the wrath of God.
