Honor and Respect
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord,
for this is right."
Ephesians 6:1
Why was this command needed?
1) They lived in a culture that devalued age,
2) They lacked the social structure that would provide for people in need,
3) It is the first command with a promise.
What does it mean to Honor your Father and Mother?
Five things we must do if we are going to truly honor our parents:
1) Respect Them,
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother." Ephesians 6:1-2a
2) Value Their Advice,
"A wise son heeds his father's instruction..." Proverbs 13:1
3) Let Them Know You Appreciate Their Efforts,
"When your mother is old, show her your appreciation." Proverbs 23:22
4) Meet Their Needs,
"But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good and acceptable before God...But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." 1 Timothy 5
"He said to them, 'All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. For Moses said, "Honor your father and your mother"; and, "He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death." But you say, "If a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God," then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.'" Mark 7:9-13
5) Forgive Their Failings.
"When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take care of me." Psalm 27:10
