My Dear Friends,
John Baker provides an illustration that many of us can relate to regarding our church wide series “Life’s Healing Choices” and, our theme for this week. Her is the illustration and explanation.
A pet-store delivery truck driver was traveling down the road. Every time he came to a stoplight, he would get out of the truck and grab a two-by-four. Then he’d run to the back and start beating on the truck’s back doors. This went on for several miles, and nobody could figure out what he was doing. Finally the guy who had been behind him pulled alongside and just had to ask, “What are you doing?”
This is only a two-ton truck,” the truck driver said,” and I’m carrying four tons of canaries. I’ve got to keep two tons of them up in the air all the time.”
That’s how some of us try to live our lives. We take desperate measures, trying to keep our life’s hurts, hang-ups, and habits up in the air so they don’t come crashing down around us. We try so hard to keep up a good front – pretending that everything is okay – when in reality, we’re struggling with real pain, and real issues that we desperately try to ignore.
For the past two weeks at church, we have been discussing this truth, “no matter how hard we try to keep everything under control, we are powerless. Whether it is our tendency to do wrong, experience hurt or cause pain, we are powerless. The good news is twofold, there is one who has the power and, that power is available. The challenge though is this, we are seldom willing to do access this power even when we are experiencing or causing great pain.
You have a choice to make, the Scriptures are clear on this (Romans 6) “Don’t you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master? You can choose sin, [your way, your path your agenda] but that leads ultimately to death, or you can choose to obey God and receive his approval.” That is a choice we need to make over and over.
Are you consciously continually committing your life to Christ over and over or, do you simply commit a part of your life, some of “the “ agenda. This choice separates those that walk authentically and intimately with Jesus and those who are casual occasional fans of Jesus. It’s all in the word “all.” All means everything. Choosing a commitment to Jesus is not about half measures. He wants everything.
The cost? Everything! Not my words. I’m just the messenger. Here it is: “No one can become my disciple without giving up everything for me.” All my life and will.
Healing is a choice, what are you going to choose?
Please take a close look at our first promo below and join us this Sunday with an appetite that is ready to receive form, “God is good”.
