Shoeboxes Due Back!
For the past several years, we have looked forward to participating in the Samaritan's Purse yearly Operation Christmas Child program. Each year, we order sufficient boxes for ourselves and serve as a collection and box drop-off centre for other churches and organizations in our area.
This is a fun project in which people pack shoebox gifts at this time of year to bless children in need around the world. Samaritan's Purse calls in thousands of volunteers annually to inspect and prepare shoeboxes for international shipping. These gifts are distributed in more than 100 countries, on six continents. Last year we collected 2,100 boxes for Samaritan's Purse from local churches and organizations and from our congregation. More than 66 per cent of these collections were donated by one TBCO couple! We praise God for their love and commitment to this ministry.
Whether you attend here or not, you are most welcome to drop by and pick up a box and fill it with items that will delight the heart of a child and reflect the love of Jesus Christ. It is hoped that each box will include a $10 donation to cover delivery costs to the distant communities where the children will receive them. However, if this poses a difficulty, all donated boxes are gratefully accepted.
Val and Hugh Saunderson have had a heart for the shoebox program for 20 years. Their personal target is to fill at least 1,000 boxes each year. Last year, they filled 1,389!
In 2014, their service was recognized by the Governor General of Canada, who presented them with the Caring Canadian Award for their service with Operation Christmas Child.
